YNES – JSF’s Featured Artist for December

Hey YNES, thanks for chatting with us today!

1) Firstly, big congratulations on all the moves you’ve been making. Can you please tell us where it all started for you music-wise?

Thank you! I started making music as YNES just before lockdown, my first gig was November 2019. I’ve been writing forever, but before then I never really had to discipline to create a project in itself. I feel like the whole YNES brand (cringe) really came together in lockdown when I had time to reflect on what I wanted out of this project.

2) Whereabouts are you based, and what can you tell us about the scene there?

I’m based in Coventry – in between Birmingham and London. The scene isn’t massive here, but we have some good transport connections with major cities and it means a lot of local musicians are able to find their crowd pretty easily. Obviously we have the likes of The Specials and later on, The Enemy, which are two great bands to come out of Coventry. I think there’s still very much an appreciation of these contrasting genres here in the city.

3) We came across your stuff in Spotify’s playlist The Punk List, then next thing you’re on Radio 1. Tell us some of your career highlights so far…

You listed two already haha! Glastonbury has to be another. I actually applied for the rising talent competition and didn’t get through, which I had sorta expected but it’s always a kicker regardless. A couple weeks later I was then fortunate enough to be asked to play by Billy Bragg, which was a massive plot twist and honestly proved to me that patience is key haha. Quite literally swings and roundabouts.

4) And what’s coming next: any touring? Is there an EP/album en route? And what can we expect from you in ’23?

I am currently on tour to celebrate the release of my upcoming EP ‘Born Loser’ – out December 9th! I’ve been lucky enough to work alongside DIY label Daemon TV on some physical releases for this, so I’m super excited. I kicked off tour with Nottingham on Saturday and I’ll be in London on Wednesday for the next show! 2023… I think I’m gonna take a breather and write as much as is humanly possible to write. Definitely important to take a step back and absorb rather than put out sometimes haha.

Follow her on the socials: @ynesmusic & on Spotify/Apple Music, it’s YNES.
