In March 2018 the Joe Strummer Foundation granted the Warren Youth Project in Hull funds to enable them to turn a dead space at The Warren into an independent community record store.
The store, Type Slowly, will be run by young people in Hull and will directly support the development of local artists by stocking their products, as well as new music from Warren Records and the wider UK underground music scene.
The store will also double up as a performance space where people can get closer to exciting new music and the people who make it. There will also be opportunities for volunteers, work placement and apprenticeships.
“The Joe Strummer Foundation has been amazing in supporting The Warren and Warren Records to offer free resources to young people in Hull. Our recent record store would not have been possible without the support of JSF. Thanks to the grant we have managed to revamp an old room in our building and create a beautiful new space to store and sell underground music and art which will also double up as a small event space for our music and spoken word groups. The response already has been amazing and space will be a huge asset to our community.” – Stewart Baxter-Arts Development Manager | Label Manager
Without people…
We are delighted to be in a position where we can help music projects like this – and we simply couldn’t do it without your help. The Joe Strummer Foundation is grateful for the help (financially, physically and spiritually) and ongoing good vibes our supporters are giving.
“The help we have received from The Joe Strummer Foundation has helped us create a space that will be more than just a shop. The space will be a place for people discover new music, a place to be inspired by new zines from around the world, a place to meet new friends and most importantly a place to inspire future generations to create. “ – Mike Barnes-Shop Manager
We have big plans for 2018, and beyond, and are always striving to do more. Please consider visiting Warren Records website, Type Slowly on Instagram and, if you can, consider making a small donation to the Joe Strummer Foundation.
